Difficult and painful menses is called as dymenorrhea. Pain and discomfort just before and/or during menstruation that is severe enough to interfere with normal daily activities is called dysmenorrhea..
Dysmenorrhea
Premenstrual syndrome often occurs in otherwise healthy women and is not related to underlying problems in the uterus or other pelvic organs. However, severe dysmenorrhea may be the result of a medical condition. 
Causes

  • Primary cause: No pelvic pathology present.
  • Secondary causes: pelvic pathology present
  • Certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Endometriosis (disorder that affects the lining of the uterus)
  • Extreme stress and anxiety
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID; infection in the reproductive system)
  • Use of an IUD (intrauterine device) as a form of contraception
Menstrual Cramps

  • Uterine fibroids (non-cancerous tumors of the uterus)  
Symptoms

  • Lower abdominal cramps
  • Intermittent sharp pain in the abdomen
  • Lower back pain
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache

Management

  1. Proper daily hygiene should be maintained
  2. Take sitz baths if menses are suppressed due to exposure to cold or getting feet wet
  3. Hot foementation should be applied to lower abdomen
  4. Hot bricks to the feet should be applied
  5. Daily habit of taking open air exercise should be built up
  6. Take easily digestible food, green leafy vegetables
  7. Eat fruits daily
  8. Should have daily bath twice a day
